Did you know?
As quoted in PRIDE.03 magazine, "The gay or lesbian child with the most famous right-wing parents is, of course, Mary Cheney.

"When Cokie Roberts asked Lynne Cheney about it, she replied angrily, "My daughter has never declared such a thing!" She declared the matter, "private."

"Lynne Cheney has no problem talking about her daughter who's married and has children, and that's not private, but Mary's relationship is," David Smith of the Human Rights Campaign said to Salon at the time. "There's a double standard."

Letter To The Editor, by Edward I. Koch
Wall Street Journal, March 23, 2004

Letter: Discrimination Against Children by the Scouts

Your March 11 editorial "Secular Absolutism" states, "Yesterday the U.S. Supreme Court turned down the Scouts' appeal of a Connecticut decision to kick them off a list of charities on its state worker voluntary-donation plan. Meanwhile the American Civil Liberties Union has routed the Scouts in San Diego."

The editorial goes on to state, "Their real crime is to have won the Supreme Court case involving their First Amendment right not to admit an openly homosexual Scoutmaster."

I believe that some cities rejecting the Boy Scouts from city programs and facilities results from their having barred some boys from joining troops simply because of their sexual orientation. That is the situation in New York City where the Board of Education barred the Scouts from using a facility.

Don't you think it is wrong to discriminate against children because of their sexual orientation? Acting out inappropriately whether by heterosexuals or homosexuals should be barred or punished, not orientation.

Finally, the national Girl Scouts organization permits homosexual Scoutmasters in their organization, as well as girls who are lesbian in orientation in their troops.

– Edward I. Koch, New York (Mr. Koch was mayor of New York from 1978 to 1989)

Inspiring Inclusiveness

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." –Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Institutionalized homophobia in the Scouts or in church or school is the cruelest of all.
It makes life miserable for young gay people and it misleads their peers with regard to the truth about gay people—that we are remarkably similar to the rest." –Ian McKellen, Actor (Gandalf in Lord of the Rings and Magneto in X-Men), quoted with permission.
