Information Booth at San Diego's Gay Pride July, 2003.
We had a very successful information booth at San Diego Gay Pride 2003. Perfect weather framed this festival celebrating diversity in San Diego. Most people had heard that the Boy Scouts of America is a discriminatory organization (approved by the good seal of the US Supreme Court). Many people thanked us for a job well done by taking the Boy Scouts of America to task as they don't even follow their own Scout Oath or Scout Law. People from all parts of the United States and Europe signed our petitions (1,169 signatures) which will be forwarded to the Boy Scout headquarters (Irving, Texas). We are petitioning that the Boys Scouts of America end their discriminatory policies against gay and atheist youth/adults. We know that we have a long road ahead of us and we will continue to forge ahead knowing that some day we can bring hatred and discrimination to an end within the organization of the Boy Scouts of America. Post cards were also signed (569 postcards signed) to be sent to the President of the United States asking him to step down as honorary President of the Boy Scouts of America. President Bush has a youth slogan, "No child left behind." This is exactly why we are asking the President not to be associated with an organization that does leave children behind: The Boy Scouts of America. We estimate that over 80% of San Diegans (all age ranges) who visited our booth knew of the sweetheart lease between the City of San Diego and the local Boy Scout District Council. Every San Diegan stated they were furious over the fact that our local tax dollars were supporting an openly discriminatory organization. --Special thanks to all of you who helped staff our information booth: Ernie, Derek, Bobby, Bob, Suzie, Linda, Ron, Howard, Mick and Mike. "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." –Martin Luther King, Jr. "Institutionalized homophobia in the Scouts or in church or school is the cruelest of all. It makes life miserable for young gay people and it misleads their peers with regard to the truth about gay people—that we are remarkably similar to the rest." –Ian McKellen, Actor (Gandalf in Lord of the Rings and Magneto in X-Men), quoted with permission.
