ACTION ALERT
1/10/2004 - (San Diego, California, USA)

1) WRITE A LETTER TO THE UNION TRIBUNE PRAISING THE SETTLEMENT BETWEEN THE CITY COUNCIL AND THE ACLU

e-mail the Union Tribune click here: letters@uniontrib.com

or copy from here: letters@uniontrib.com

NOTE: All letters to the editor require your full name, address and phone number. This is their new verification policy. The Union Tribune does not publish your address or phone number.

The ACLU is asking everyone to write a letter to the editor of the Union Tribune praising the settlement between the City Council and the ACLU. You can email a letter to the editor at letters@uniontrib.com. Please remember, the UT prints letters in direct proportion to the number they receive. Here’s a few thoughts about what a letter might say:

  • The City should not be subsidizing discrimination with our tax dollars.
  • The Scouts cannot have their cake and eat it too. They went all the way to the US Supreme Court to establish their constitutional right to discriminate. They cannot now ask the taxpayers to subsidize that discrimination. The Boy Scouts may not be for all boys, but public parks are.
  • The scouts will continue to have equal access to park facilities, just like the dozens of other community groups that use the park. What will end after this process plays itself out is the unique, non-competitive, virtually free sweetheart deal the Scouts have been getting from the City.
  • All of this trouble and expense could have been avoided if the Council had just done the right thing in the first place.
  • Praise for those who voted to settle: Atkins (especially), Zucchet, Lewis, Frye, Peters, Inzunza.

2) IT IS URGENT TO WRITE TO YOUR COUNCILMEMBER AND THANK THEM FOR VOTING AGAINST THE LEASE BETWEEN THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO AND THE BOYS SCOUTS.

Please call or email your council member, especially if s/he voted correctly, and express your appreciation or disappointment, depending on what applies. Phone numbers and emails are on the City website. FYI, Murphy and Madaffer voted NO, Maienschein wasn't around to vote.

Councilmembers who voted against the City of San Diego & the Boy Scouts lease in Balboa Park:
Scott Peters   Michael Zucchet   Toni Atkins   Charles Lewis   Donna Frye   Ralph Inzunza

Note: Councilmembers want your full name, address and phone number attached to all e-mails.

--End of Action Alert.

What Makes A Good Letter To The Editor?
Reference a Union-Tribune article (or Letter To The Editor), keep it SHORT, and "maintain civility and raise the level of discourse in public debate." (Quoted portion of the last sentence from the internet article concerning writing good letters to the editor from the San Francisco Chroncile, these tips linked below are universal.)

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." –Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Institutionalized homophobia in the Scouts or in church or school is the cruelest of all.
It makes life miserable for young gay people and it misleads their peers with regard to the truth about gay people—that we are remarkably similar to the rest." –Ian McKellen, Actor (Gandalf in Lord of the Rings and Magneto in X-Men), quoted with permission.
